Weaving pop anthems from candy shoelaces and crafting gingerbread birdhouses for their intricate arpeggio sprinkled heartworks Shana Tova have quickly become one of the UK’s brightest hopes for future success.
“The agenda is that every song had to be a bullseye” said guitarist Geordie recently. “Too many supposedly classic artists release music that falls short. Indie in it’s purest form gets pushed aside by trends, like the disco-indie herd: As long as at least a few of us remember what real music is it will never be lost.”
Shana Tova are accustomed to critical acclaim and a fanatical following from indie record collectors UK-wide, from their roles played in previous musical incarnations: Geordie co-fronted The Starries as one half of a songwriting duo described as “the Lennon & McCartney of Lo-Fi”, by Alan Farmer of Bearos Records. Leanne graced the pages of the national music press in all conquering all girl media magnet Twist, and both Geordie and Leanne enjoyed releases on London’s Fierce Panda label. The trio is completed by Alan, who confounded all-comers in Awkward Records’ proto fight-pop brain scramblers Panda Love Unit featuring one Alexei from Johnny Foreigner.
Geordie told us “I was at a Kandinsky exhibition a while back. This fella painted what music looked like in his head and it was like what I see, but I don’t see paint but interweaving rustic wools and hessians, like an aural shawl”. With this eccentric outlook the band takes inspiration from poetry, pop music and performance art, alongside a lot of 80’s and 90’s US and UK alternative pop and rock.
The band release a split EP with Lichfield’s Little Dipper, which will surface later in the year. Keep your eyes peeled on.
