Iain Armstrong

Iain Armstrong is a Birmingham based composer/sound artist producing work for fixed media intended for concert diffusion, home listening, radio and installation. Working with found sounds recorded from the sound environment he aims to exploit the inherent musicality of this material through digital analysis, manipulation and transformation. This frequently results in organic structures and soundscapes that explore familiar and abstract sound objects and their interactions. As an ex-member of BEAST Iain’s music is regularly diffused on multi-channel loudspeaker systems around the UK and his work has featured in several international festivals and concerts.

Iain’s installation work is more socially engaged, developing a participatory practice through extensive interviews with minority communities. The sound and photography installation and CD box set Forgotten Fairytales documented the lives and experiences of gay people in Northamptonshire and premiered at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. …if the voices were only memories?, a 10 channel sound installation, was commissioned by Salford Museum and Art Gallery and explored issues around refugees and asylum seekers.

Iain occasionally performs laptop sets somewhere between electroacoustic and electronica having played the odd pub in London, a rugby club in Cardiff and squat party in Zurich. This will be his second Project X Presents appearance.
