Project X Presents 4 @ B.U.S.C - September 13th 2008

After looking at over 30 venues, (and having to say goodbye to some real life financial support from New Generation Arts because of it), i am pleased to announce that we have finally found the perfect venue to house, our 3 stages and 80 participants for our forthcoming Project X Presents event, to be held on Saturday September 13th 2008... Birmingham United Services Club!

Before the refit

Capsule, Supersonic and Project X Presents

Project X gets a mention in this very interesting interview with Lisa Meyer and Jenny Moore the talented and hard working due behind what has become an institution of independence (if that makes sense!) on the Birmingham creative scene - Capsule. The video is shot and hosted by the indispensible Created in Birmingham blogsite.

The interview mentions that the PXP group looked at over 30 potential locations for our fourth live event which was scheduled to take place in June - without success.

A mention for Project X Presents in a fine Birmingham Post blog

Encouraging to see PXP get a big up mention in this very inspiring post from Custard Factory Creative Director Simon Jones on the Birmingham Post site.

Simon remarks that we "have been bringing some of the most renowned international performers to innovative events in Birmingham." before going on to say that "The wealth of independent musical creativity in this city is simply astounding, not just that but its getting bigger and better every year that passes."

Thanx-LAB:VL

Thank you to everyone who came along to, took part, helped put on and enjoyed X-LAB:VL on Friday at Concrete. A successful night if eye witness reports are to be believed. I have to make do with the photos for now which you can find here:

but I look forward to your reports and reviews.

Anyone who gave us their email address will be entered into a prize draw for two pairs of tickets to our next show on Saturday 14th June 2008.

More details to be announced in mid March.

Loopz - Lab:VL

Some more news on the line up for X-LAB:VL.

Loopz bring their experimental/edgy musical explorations along to the party. Loopz is Steve Price - a long time friend of and collaborator with Orbital who has worked with U-Ziq, Venetian Snares, Higher Intelligence Agency, Frog Pocket, Chevron and Ochre. He tells us that he “…very much enjoys the art of experimentation” so opening the night for the Project X Presents X–LAB(oratory):VL evening should suit him just fine!

See you on Friday!

See you on Friday!

Preparations for X-LAB:VL continued apace over the weekend with the completion and testing of two Object X pieces. The Light Wheel will occupy the mirrored passage that leads to the back room of the venue where the “echo to infinity” effect of having two mirrors facing each other is already quite impressive. Once the Object X interactive exhibit gets installed that area will become something else entirely. We can’t wait to see it in situ.

Additions to the line up for X-LAB:VL include Vix n the Kix - a bostin’ brand spanking new band bursting with talent and brimming with sexy, burlesque-y yumminess fronted by Vix (ex Fuzzbox). Expect lashings of candy-coated rock ‘n’ roll and melody-filled loveliness.

Why doesn't www.projectxpresents.com itself appear on the first few pages of a google search for X-LAB:VL?

As regular listeners will know, I'm quite obsessed by such things.

I'm delighted that Project X Presents appears to be the only people in the world to use the name X-LAB:VL but a bit perplexed as to why our own website advertising our own event on 22nd February at Concrete (formerly The Boiler Room, The Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, UK - check NEXT PROJECT above) doesn't come up on the first page of hits.

Project X Presents: Xlab V1

Project X time again and we’ve foregone some of the performance for this one to try out a few of the techier ideas. I will be doing a couple of av sets, one based around youtube lo fi stuff using the freeware flash based FLXER vj software, and also something a bit slicker originally inspired by the club scene in the Twin Peaks film.

Things of note will be the Object X guys applying rocket science to installation art - I jest not, the fellows range from research experiment technicians at Birmingham uni to aerospace designers to Shoreditch science teachers… and they’ve got some ingenious proximity based/footswitchin/interactive sofa sound/light/motion structures all over the place, so you really can ‘watch your step’.

PXP in action 2

A few years ago a band called Lash Frenzy took to the stage at a packed Flapper & Firkin.

Lash Frenzy is a sound art project from Birmingham musician Andrew Moscardo-Parker. Under the name Lash Fenzy Andrew has an outlet for the more unstructured elements of the Black Sabbath influenced song writing and performance techniques that he has been perfecting (with some considerable success!) since the fateful day many years ago when he first heard Tony Iommi’s detuned powerchords.

In 2007 Andrews’s involvement with Project X Presents (as a member of Einstellung) led him to revive Lash Frenzy. Discussions about Einstellung’s contributions resulted in PXP’s invitation for Andrew to curate an Aural Fight sequence for the 2007 show. The result featured Andrew and his Matamp amplifier (as well as the rest of Einstellung’s arsenal of valve driven analogue backline) “against” Mort The Sonic – a digital musician who converts text and image files to sound on his lap top and amplifies the resulting industrial tones.
